"Be careful."
This is a phrase we hear everywhere in security. It’s in our inboxes, mentioned during training sessions, and visible in those reminders that appear after someone clicks a suspicious link. But constantly reminding people to be careful can start to feel like background noise.
At Discern Security, we’ve found that what matters isn’t how often you repeat the message. It’s whether you can show that your security is working when and where it matters most.
From Mindset to Measurable Action
Sure, being cautious is important. But the truth is that attackers aren’t slowing down. Simply being "aware" isn’t enough anymore. You need real and measurable proof that your controls are working.
That’s what we focus on at Discern. Our customers want to know if they’re safer today than they were last month. That kind of confidence only comes from seeing the facts, stress-testing your defenses, and zeroing in on what it takes to reduce risk.
So, what sets wishful thinking apart from effective protection? Consider these five key indicators that move beyond “be careful” and focus on measurable outcomes:
1. Make MFA Coverage Visible and Close Gaps
Simply deploying MFA isn’t enough. The real question is whether you know which users and systems are protected, and where the gaps are.
We’ve seen plenty of organizations turn on MFA for certain accounts and assume that the task is complete. In practice, attackers go straight for the exceptions, and so should you. Track MFA coverage as a percentage, identify legacy accounts that remain exempt, and address these gaps before someone else does.
2. Drive Continuous Endpoint Hygiene and Visibility
Next, let’s talk about the endpoint. This means the laptops, workstations, and servers that attackers love to target. The key here is visibility.
Do you know how many assets you actually have in your environment? How many are missing updates or running out-of-date security tools?
At Discern, we encourage teams to keep a running tally and focus on the endpoints that slip through the cracks. The more visibility you have, the faster you can jump on problems before they get serious.
3. Identify and Address Risky Configuration Exceptions
Every IT environment has its “just this once” exceptions. This includes special firewall rules, old admin accounts, or that legacy box no one dares to touch. The biggest danger isn’t that these exist, but that you don’t know where they are or how many you have.
Discern helps teams track exceptions in real time and keep tabs on who has what, for how long. You can’t fix what you can’t see, so start by making the unknowns known.
4. Accelerate Your Time-to-Remediate
Incidents may arise due to vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, or the appearance of a potentially suspicious alert. The real test is: how fast can your team jump in and fix it?
Time-to-Remediate (TTR) indicates how quickly you can spot and resolve problems. We always suggest breaking down TTR by incident type and team, so you see where things lag. The faster you fix, the less time attackers have to do damage. It’s that simple.
A brief note regarding authentication: Not all forms of multifactor authentication provide the same level of security. Attackers are getting better at bypassing basic MFA or tricking users. Make sure you know how many people use phishing-resistant methods, such as FIDO2 or hardware tokens. Do not classify MFA solely as either “on” or “off.” Instead, dig into the details and focus on what really keeps attackers out.
5. Continuously Validate and Improve Controls
It’s tempting to treat security like a to-do list: “Did we train the team? Did we turn on MFA?” But attackers don’t care about your audit schedule. That’s why at Discern, we’re all about continuous validation. This means constantly checking, testing, and improving your defenses.
If you wouldn’t trust a smoke alarm that only gets checked once a year, why trust a security control that isn’t being tested in real time?
6. Move Beyond Security Theater With Results
Ultimately, security is defined by outcomes, not reassurances or advice. At Discern, we help organizations move beyond “be careful” to achieve clear, practical, and proven risk reduction.
Are you ready to see where your security stands – and prove it? Start measuring what matters, turn insight into action, and make security a result you can see. Let’s move beyond advice and build measurable protection, together.
